What Is Plastic Injection Molding?

Plastic injection molding is a versatile and efficient manufacturing process that produces plastic components by injecting heated liquid plastic resin into a custom metal mold, where it cools and hardens into the desired shape.

This highly controlled and precise method minimizes waste while allowing for the mass production of durable, interchangeable plastic parts.

Product Dimensions & Machine Capabilities

  • Smallest part size: 0.25 inches
  • Weight range: .005 – 32 oz.
  • Maximum part dimensions: 15 x 15 inches with a depth up to 8 inches (varies by product)
  • Machine capacity: 55 to 400 tons

How Plastic Injection Molding Works

All plastic parts begin as thermoplastic pellets, which are melted down into a liquid and funneled into a pressurized nozzle. The molten plastic is then injected into a custom mold, ensuring zero spills, minimal waste and consistent results across all parts.

Once inside the mold, the pressurized plastic fills every detail, preventing air bubbles and delivering uniform quality. As the material cools, it hardens into the exact shape specified by the mold.

Key Process Features

  • Mold Design: Each mold consists of two parts – a cavity and a core – and can be fully customized based on project specifications. Most molds are made from steel or aluminum, as they withstand high temperatures.
  • Material Options: Choose from virgin plastic resin or recycled plastic based on project needs.
  • Precision & Consistency: Hydraulic, electric-powered or hybrid injection ensures even, high-quality results with each production run.
  • Temperature Control: Proper heat levels help achieve accurate formation and eliminate inconsistencies, plus increases efficiencies in cycle times.
  • Polishing & Finishing: Excess plastic is removed post-production to create a mirror finish or any custom texture.
