Hot Die Stamping

Hot die stamping is one of the oldest decorating technologies, known to produce durable, high-contrast finishes. It involves transferring foil, film or ink onto parts using a heated metal die and pressure, ideal for adding logos, words, textures or graphics.

American Plastic Products offers hot die stamping as a post-molding value-added service, part of our turnkey plastic manufacturing solutions. Whether for branding, decoration or functional requirements, learn how we integrate hot die stamping into your order.

What Is Hot Die Stamping?

Also known as foil stamping or foil blocking, this post-molding service uses heat and pressure to apply foil or ink directly onto plastic, metal or wood parts.

The process starts with a multilayer film: the base includes an adhesive, the top carries the final finish and the pigment lies between them. Here’s how it works:

Only the design is transferred; unlike liquid-based applications, there’s no overspray or residue.

  • A custom metal die with your design is created.
  • The die heats and presses the film, transferring the design to the part’s surface.
  • Heat activates the adhesive layer, bonding the film to the substrate.
  • Only the design is transferred; unlike liquid-based applications, there’s no overspray or residue.

This method:

  • Capable of decorating on both flat and contoured surfaces.
  • Supports single and multi-color logos, textures or words in matte, metallic or glossy finishes.
  • Produces crisp, repeatable graphics ideal for high-volume runs.

Types of Dies

The hot die stamping process uses specialized equipment with either a hard or soft heated die. Hard dies are best for flat surfaces and deliver longer-lasting, deeply embossed designs. Materials include:

  • Copper – durable and etched for sharp detailing.
  • Brass – allows for high-speed stamping and deep impressions.
  • Magnesium – cost-effective for shorter runs.
  • Steel – hardened for durability in large production runs.

Soft dies made from silicone rubber offer flexibility for stamping curved or irregular surfaces. These dies:

  • Reduce waste material.
  • Apply designs with less pressure.
  • Support complex layouts, including multi-layer or pre-curved parts.
  • Are ideal for “tipping” where raised letters or patterns are applied without embossing.

Benefits of Hot Die Stamping

Why choose hot die stamping?

  • Enhances a wide range of plastic materials with branding or functional text.
  • Produces a long-lasting, wear-resistant finish without chemical inks or paints.
  • Creates sharp graphics and clear text – even on dark backgrounds.
  • Maintains color fidelity, with foil or ink that won’t change during transfer.
  • Offers stronger adhesion than labels or stickers, as heat bonds the film to the part.

Hot Die Stamping Applications

This finishing process is ideal for adding:

  • Logos
  • Instructions or warning labels
  • Textures or decals
  • Raised or embossed lettering
  • Color highlights or accent designs
